How long does perfume/cologne last?

My coworker wants to start wearing cologne he bought 5 years ago but wanted to make sure that it wouldn't give me an alergic reaction. Does perfume/cologne have a shelf life? How long does perfume/cologne last?
It should still be good. Especially if it's a more expensive brand.

The only thing that would make a perfume change over time is evaporation (caused by bad bottling) or cheap, volatile fragrance oils. Fragrance oils, because they are synthetic, tend to decay more rapidly and more easily (like from sunlight) than essential oils. Most nice perfume companies use essential oils...cheaper brands might not. I would just check it out... if it smells weird, don't wear it. If it smells nice, go ahead and try it out.

Just because it's old doesn't mean that you would be allergic to it.How long does perfume/cologne last?
F I V E years ago?? I wouldn't even consider it. Tell him to break down and buy more.
I don't think it will give an allergic reaction if it didn't do that when he first bought it but it might not smell good anymore.
If the cap is closed and the oils (that give off the odors) don't combine with oxygen and go rancid (thereby altering the scent), perfumes should last for decades.
Yes, it probably stinks by now.....
Fragrances don't last forever, although pefumes and colognes stored under the proper conditions can last MANY, MANY years. I have some VERY old perfumes that are still PERFECT because they have been stored under the right conditions. A good place to store bottles is in a cool dark drawer or closet. It all depends on the way it is stored. If it was stored in a cool dark place it will be fine. Light and Heat will destroy your perfumes. You can even store colognes %26amp; eau de toilettes in the refrigerator, but not pure parfums, because of the higher concentration of oils. NEVER store them in the bathroom because of the changing temps, and NEVER EVER store them in your car.

Another thing to consider is air exposure, if its a splash bottle without a very tight fitting stopper it can allow in air which will destroy the fragrance.

The best way to tell if a fragrance is starting to ';turn'; or has ';gone bad'; is to try it out, put a little on your wrist (DONT rub it! NEVER rub fragrances on your skin, that crushes the scent, just apply it and let it be) then smell it, you should be able to tell if it is OK, because first of all its bad it will no longer smell as it should, a ';spoiled'; perfume may take on a strong sour smell for example, another way to tell is if it has changed color, they will turn darker.

I very highly doubt that wearing an old perfume would cause an allergic reaction unless of course the person was allergic to it in the first place. If it has ';gone bad'; probably the only reaction it is likely to cause is a funky smell on your skin. Trust me, If it still smells good, then there is NO reason not to wear it. There are many scents that have been discontinued for upwards of 20 years that are still selling today (for extremely high prices mind you) that were stored correctly and are still perfectly usable and are very highly sought after.
It really depends on the name..

Some are stronger than others.
It can make you sneeze at times. If you are allergic just stay away from him.
It depends really some last longer then others, just tell him to type the cologne name in at Google and get some information on it, maybe it will say how long it lasts and what ever else..
From my experience

Im using Princess by Vera Wang

It lasts for like at least 10 hours
Everything has a shelf life. Some things longer than others. A five year old cologne probably wouldn't smell too good unless it's never been opened and even then I wouldn't chance it. (Unless he's out doors that is.)
depends on the quality
I found a bottle of Channel #5 while cleaning a friends grandfathers house. He told me that it was his wife's who had passed away over 20 years ago. The bottle was still full and in the black container. For as long as I've been wearing it, the black container hasn't changed much, but you can tell it's not new. The perfume smelled very good, as a matter of fact, I thought a little better than the Channel #5's I buy. I'm not sure if it's because of age or because now they water it down a little more.

So go figure.

How many of you are affected by perfumes and colognes, etc. in the pool?

I feel like I'm suffocating when some jerk hops in the pool with a ton of the stinky stuff on.How many of you are affected by perfumes and colognes, etc. in the pool?
Sometime I do get affected by people wearing strong perfume or cologne - maybe it's because of chlorine mixing with these or the sense of smell a bit strong when you're in the water.

Cologne was what made me notice my husband. Cologne has always had a VERY powerful effect on me and still does.Have you ever gotten turned on from smelling cologne or perfume?
Oh yes... Any guy who wears Gio by Giorgio Armani turns me the hell on... Mmmm it smells sooo good Report Abuse

oh yeah!!! Anytime i smell cologne i wanna do the guy wearing it. It is a HUGE turn on for me. Doesnt even matter what kind, although I do have my favorites. COLOGNE IS SOOOO SEXY.
OMG....Yes. My baby's daddy wears this cologne called Very Sexy for Men by Victoria Secret. He could've just pissed me off in the worst way, but when I see him the first thing I do is french kiss him because I am so turned on by the way he smells. Melts my panties right off. And then I have to give him some just for smelling good. And you're welcome
NO, I get turned off by colognes and perfumes, most of them just stink!
Actually ya. i mean there was this one cologne from Mary Kay. it is for males and man that made me want to go home, spray it on my b/f and well you know what I was thinking at that point. so yeah I believe it does.
Yes I have. I had to get my boyfriend ';Armani'; by Armani cuz the smell drives me insane. We don't get far when he puts that on!!
turned on? no. like the smell yes. cologne and perfume work differently on each person. one person can where it and smell really good and one person can where it and smell offensive. it has to do with body chemistry and the perfume chemistry.
yeah it works. Ive been in packed elevators and one girls perfume cought my attention or passing a girl in the corridor in college and cought a whif an almost got whiplash!
ALL THE TIME. It's amazing. Pretty much the biggest turn on ever.
My husband uses a kind that is designed to turn people on. The stuff actually uses/mixes with your pheromones after applied, and then when it hits people, those pheromones get a workin'. We did an experiment with it to prove it, it worked... hhe

    and I like it..

Nasty guy colonge is gross. My cotton candy perfume also attracts people like mad, it actually kinda sucks. hehe
    THAT'S THE WHOLE IDEA!
yeah my friend hes a guy waz wearing this colonge the other day and i threw my arms around him just to smell the cologne!!!!!!! it waz imbarrising but he was just laughing :)
Sometimes. But it isn't always the best idea. In fact, there are studies that suggest that smell is one of the ways we weed out mates that may be genetically incompatible with us. The best way to ensure the continuation of the species is to mix genes that are very different from each other. If one has a genetic strength against cancer but is weak to heart disease, and mixes with one who is weak to cancer but strong to heart disease, there is a good chance the child will be strong to both (getting a strength against both diseases from whichever parent has that strength).

If however, both have high cancer probability or high heart disease probability, the child will also and that means most likely they all die (which ends the species if enough children get stuck with this). Which is why you are told not to get with your sister, she has similar genetic makeup to you and so if you procreate with her (or your brother if you are female) you are likely to get a kid with the all the same problems you both have. Which is why so many inbred children are retarded and various other problems.

Smell is how we weed out those similar to us. Bad smelling body odor turns us away because it smells bad because it is similar to ours. But with deodorants blocking the smell of our genetic makeup and cologne/perfume providing a new one that smells good, there is a fairly good chance you will be mixing with someone similar in genetic makeup (and therefore genetically incompatible) to you. Which means an increased chance in retarded or otherwise handicapped children.

The best idea is to keep yourself clean (to avoid dirt messing with the smell of your genetic makeup) and to limit scents and deodorants and then you are more likely to find someone more genetically compatible to you based on their smelling good anyway.

The fact that retardation and diseases like ADD and ADHD are up in America is proof that colognes and perfumes do work at what they are supposed to work at, but not for the overall benefit of our procreation. I like the scents that are provided for the most part too, but I do my best to avoid them and it has always worked for the best.
chicks do, guys don't. We do get turned OFF by a stinking unclean vaginal orifice.

What kind of Perfume/Cologne should i use?

I'm a man. I'm looking for that kind of perfume or cologne that can be smelled from a long distance and after you pass a person still to smell.

first of all, you don't want to be smelled from a long distance. trust me, it's a huge turn off. it makes you look like you're trying way too hard. and i mean, if you smell strong from far away imagine how you'll smell up close! it's attractive when a man walks by you and you get that subtle smell. then you'll wanna get closer. women: chanel no.5 or victoria secrets

men: ambercombie and fitch or hollisterWhat is your favorite perfume or cologne?
How old are you? If you're in your teens, you'll probably like the ';teen'; type scents (what I always refer to as Bubble Gum perfume). I'm in my 40's, so I prefer more exotic, spicier, classier scents such as Obsession, Ysatis, Paloma Picasso, etc., etc. Perfume is a personal statement, so take your time, choose the one that best represents you, and go for it.
Chance by Chanel!! My favorite ever. Or try Coco Chanel

What perfume or cologne for men is really the best for you?

Please give me your top 3... Thanks. What perfume or cologne for men is really the best for you?
Christian Dior: Eau Savage. This fragrance has been around a long time..and its not going anywhere soon. That's because it has a proven record of being irresistable to women. All these modern fragrances...they come and they go...but Eau Savage remains. The bottle is classy, the colour is good...but the fragrance...which smells slightly different on every man- has a fresh, citrus smell which doesnt overwhelm the natural musky undertones of a man...its very sexy....I recommend it....its great on women too. A close second is Chanel's Pour Homme which is great in winter...its musky and sensual. My third favourite is when you blend Eau Savage with Pour Homme....MMMMhhhmmmmmm....try it!What perfume or cologne for men is really the best for you?

How many people can't stand the smell of heavy perfume or cologne?

I think it should be banned in public places, when someone has heavy perfume or cologne on, I get an instant headache, and get very miserable. It is not a nice thing to me at all, any other opinions? How many people can't stand the smell of heavy perfume or cologne?
i think the same too krystl....some people just put on a lil too much perfume!!!!How many people can't stand the smell of heavy perfume or cologne?
Damn, you are right. I felt like my lungs had been coated with toxins the last time I walked through the local mall. I don't want to smell anyone from over thirty feet away.
It doesn't bother me, but there are people who have allergies and get physically sick if the odors are too strong.

Also, people should not pile perfume on. Just a little touch %26amp; everyone would be happy.
    %26lt;%26lt;waving my hand in the air%26gt;%26gt;
LOL! It is air pollution! Call Green Peace!

Yeah, I'm one of theose who can't stand any strong smell.. most people put on too much perfume or strong perfume because they can't smell more subtle ones, or because they have B.O.

But it's not much better than B.O. if the perfume is strong. It just becomes a different kind of B.O.

    Gas masks please!!
its the word HEAVY that hits the mark.

everyone has their own scent, like babies for instance (too bad more people don't have that baby scent) and everyone (or nearly everyone) wears their own perfume or cologne to go with them.

if these scents are used in a reasonable fashion, no one should have a problem with it. But when people spray on so much they they themselves can smell it wherever they go, it ruins it for everyone!

that happened in my office, one person didn't know how to wear it properly and a new office rule was applied that no one was allowed to wear it anymore, light or heavy
Dear Lord..do I EVER agree with you! There are some ';scents'; that actually make me nauseous...

Where I used to work (a high end furniture store)..after Christmas we used to DREAD...we called it the Perfume Parade...EVERY single woman in the city who got perfume (most often the powder and the lotion and the soap, etc, etc., etc) would come in to the store REEKING of the scent they apparently felt compelled for some UNKNOWN reason to wear ALL of the lotion, powder, perfume, and GO SHOPPING...They would ACTUALLY leave ';scent trails';...I have given customers over to other salespeople because their perfume/cologne was so overwhelming I couldn't stand to smell it...we even had little ';contests'; among ourselves (';guess that scent';) and then we would ask the patron what it was they were wearing...(we would keep score in our offices!)...so...if someone does that to YOU...it just might be a clue YOU are wearing too much!
I HATE it!!! No one should be able to smell you from ten feet away. Ever. Some people have bad allerigies to that crap, too...Ever get caught in an elevator with someone wearing, say, half a gallon of Giorgio? Ugh!
Your right I can't stand that stuff either it makes me want to scream like WHY WOULD YOU POUR THE ENTIRE BOTTLE ON!!!!!!!!!! This just happened this past weekend w/ my BF, and he said he only put a splash on b/c he knows how i get. I was like NO you didn't b/c if you did i wouldn't be all stuffed up and my nose wouldn't be irritated right now. But I do agree I really can't stand that!
Sadly even though I AGREE THAT HEAVY FRAGRANCES ARE HORRIBLE TO BARE, I HAVE TO SAY THAT ONCE YOU START MAKING LAWS ON EVERY LITTLE THING JUST CAUSE SOME PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT AND HAVE NO COMMON SENCE THAT IT WILL BITE YOU IN THE A SS. ONE OF THESE DAYS IT WILL BE TO THE POINT THAT THEY WILL ACTUALLY LEGISLATE WHAT HOUR'S ARE FOR EATING. TO MAKE PEOPLE LOSE WEIGHT. OR TO SAVE ON FOOD COSTS. IT IS ALL THE SAME THING. PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO WARE WHAT THEY WANT EVEN IF THEY HAVE NO COMMON SENCE OR COMMON COURTESY. CAUSE DIDN'T YOU KNOW IT ISN'T VERRY COMMON ANYMORE!!

What ever happened to manners? It seems like there is just a general lack of manners anymore. No please or thank you said, rarely someone bothers to hold the door open for you, and such foul language. What is happening? Does it really take that much effort that people cannot be polite and courteous? People lack driving manners, eating manners, and just manners in general.

Growing up my parents taught me manners and made them a part of my everyday life. I make sure to always say please and thank you and I will always hold the door open for someone who is behind me. I do not do it because I feel obligated to; I do it because I feel it is the right thing.

During high school, one the organizations I was in, there was about 15 members in it, and I was disgusted at the lack of manners. So, I started to say please and thank you for others when they would ask a favor or someone would do something nice for someone, and once they heard me say it, they would say it too. People would walk in the room and if someone was in their way they would just walk into them, they would not say excuse me. In addition, if someone accidentally bumped into you they would not say, ';Excuse me'; or ';I'm sorry.'; I thought it was very rude. At one point I was so upset with the lack of manners, I brought in kids book I had at home on manners and read it to them one day. I did end up with the nickname ';where are you manners?'; but people started to be more polite towards each other.

Even in the media, on talk shows, people are constantly interrupting each other or bashing others. If you don't like someone that's fine, but there is no need to be so rude about it. People have different opinions and that is okay; it is a part of life, but you don't have to get mean and rude about it. It is healthy to have a good debate, but when people start to get personal and attack others, that is just out of hand.

Eating manners; the one that bothers me the most is cell phone etiquette, when you hear someone's cell phone ring loud in clear in a restaurant and they answer it and have a loud conversation. Can you say rude? Please be courteous of everyone around you who might like to enjoy a nice dinner without overhearing someone else's phone conversation. Just the lack of general manner while eating, elbows on the table, talking with your mouth full, when did these things become acceptable?

Manners while driving - this is a pet peeve of mine, because a lot of the lack of manners while driving can jeopardize your safety and the safety of others. People are constantly tailgating others, which can cause accidents if someone has to stop suddenly. The majority of the times this happens, people are following the speed limit and others just seem to be in a rush. Have some respect; you are not the only one on the road who has to get somewhere. It is very similar for cutting people off too; some people just do not pay attention and others are in a rush. There are driving laws for a reason.

Foul language also really bothers me - the use of the ';F-bomb'; more than anything else does. It is just a rude word, yet people use it all the time, and somehow is has multiple meanings; it can be used as a verb or an adjective. The word just has a vulgar sound to it, it does not sound very nice, and it is used in many rude ways. Many other words that could replace the ';F-bomb'; sound better and not near as vulgar. It just does not sound very nice or professional.

We should always treat others with the utmost respect. Say please, thank you, and excuse me when necessary. Hold the door open if someone is right behind you. When you are driving, don't tailgate, and there is no need to cut anyone off. When you are eating, put your napkin on your lap, keep your elbows off the table, and don't talk with your mouth full. Cut back on foul language, it's not that hard. These are all examples of simple manners. You don't have to go out of your way to do any of these things. It is just common courtesy. People get mad when others are rude to them, yet they are also rude themselves. Simple solution: mind your manners, think before you speak, remember there are other people around you.

Sometimes the lack of manners makes me wonder if etiquette classes should be mandatory in schools. Not everyone has perfect manners, and that is okay, but everyone can remember to say things like ';please,'; ';thank you,'; and ';excuse me.'; Please, just remember to be courteous to those around you and mind your manners. Thank you.
